Wire feeders are simply a modification of the primary elements in a basic welding
circuit and provide varying levels of welding automation. The wire feeder and
the semiautomatic welding gun replace the function of the electrode holder as used
in stick welding. Wire feeders can be stand alone
units or an integrated part of a welding power source, commonly known as a
wire feeder welder.
A typical wire feeder has a wire reel or spool mount, two or four drive rolls
for pulling/pushing the wire electrode, drive motor and controls, and two cables:
one for welding current and the wire conduit, and one for wires that contain the
circuit to activate wire feed. The wire reel, drive mechanism and control can be
packaged as a single unit or can be available as separate components for mounting
on a welding arm (boom mount) or robotic welding applications.
Some wire feeders, such as Lincoln's DH-10 and Power Feed™ 10M Dual, have dual
electrode delivery and control systems that allow the user to weld with two different
welding consumables, with two different
welding procedures using one power source.
A spool gun is a type of wire feeder that has its drive mechanism and wire electrode
supply incorporated into the welding gun.
A push-pull gun is similar to a spool gun (without the wire electrode supply) and is
used as part of a wire feeding system - the drive mechanism in the push-pull gun works
in conjunction with the drive in the master wire feeder.
The exact requirements for purchasing a wire feeder depend on the power source,
portability, welding consumable type and diameter, the type of welding gun, and
the distance between the wire feeder and welding gun.
